Can’t tell you how many times we get called to a home asking us to investigate an odor in the bathroom. Most folks think it’s a venting issue but many times it’s a dirty overflow in the lavatory. This doesn’t mean the sink isn’t clean but most people don’t think of actually cleaning the overflow and that’s where all kinds of yucky stuff can gather.. 2 things you can do. I keep a small spray bottle of bleach and just spray that all around inside the overflow hole about once a month. This will kill any bacteria growing in there can that cause an odor. Another thing you can do is fill the sink with water and add some bleach to the water. Fill it enough so that the water goes into the overflow. Let the water run through the overflow for a few minutes and then drain the sink. I prefer the bleach sprayed right into the overflow myself.

Traps

Did you know? If you have plumbing traps in your home that are rarely used, the water can evaporate and allow sewer gas into your home. It’s a good idea to pour a bucket of water into floor drains every month or so and run water in sinks, tubs and showers that don’t get used often.
